Disease-free Certification Requirement Set for Shrimp Exporters
28 Aug 2017
In Vietnam, shrimp processors and exporters have faced difficulties in exports due to the increasingly strict technical barriers related to disease-free certification requirement put up by importing countries. Recently, six countries — Australia, the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, China, Brazil and Mexico—have said they would only buy shrimp products with disease-free certification in accordance with World Organization for Animal Health regulations or other authorized certification agencies. The above markets account for 25 percent of Vietnam’s total shrimp exports, which is valued at 800 million USD a year.1
In May 2017, according to China’s National Aquaculture Technology Station, Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces were all at risk of white spot outbreaks. Shrimp farmers had to clear between 30-90% of their ponds in and transferred new shrimp larvae, because of the disease. Many shrimp farmers, for example local district in Zhanjiang, farmers were afraid to restock their ponds because they feared that diseases would wipe them out again.2
