Shrimp Haemocyte Iridescent Virus (SHIV/DIV1)
Shrimp Haemocyte Iridescent Virus (SHIV), also known as Decapod Iridescent Virus 1 (DIV1) was first detected and identified from diseased white leg shrimp P. vannamei in December 2014 from Zhejiang Province, China. Research has shown that this virus mainly infects the hematopoietic and hemocytes
in P. vannamei in all stages of shrimps (PLs, juveniles, adults). The virus exhibited a typical icosahedral structure with a mean diameter around 150 nm. It has been identified as a new threat to the shrimp farming industry
Clinical signs of infected shrimp
- Hepatopancreatic atrophy with colour fading and yellowing
- Slightly reddish body
- Empty stomach and guts
- Diseased shrimp sink to the bottom of the pond
- Soft shell in partially infected shrimp
Mortality rate
Mortality rate of up to 80% in late-postlarvae, juvenile or subadult prawns
Infected shrimp types
P. vannamei, M. rosenbergii, Exopalaemon carinicauda, M. nipponense, Procambarus clarkii and C. quadricarinatus
Mode of transmission
Cannibalism of infected shrimp or contact with infected faeces
